Il mio solo pensiero, Tosca, sei tu!

It was difficult, but I made up my mind. I'm selfish and I won't tell you anything of what happened last night at the Tosca relay here in Bucharest.

I won't tell that the evening started with a short press conference where Angela said she considers recording a Mozart album, that the Qatar project includes a duet with Roberto and that there'll be a recital at La Scala with the Romanian pianist Dan Grigore. Then she looked straight to me and puff.. I don't remember anything else.

I won't tell you that the Opera House where Tosca was relayed was packed, that people saluted Angela's presence there with lots of applauses, that the second act is still my favorite and Tosca's final look towards the dead Scarpia got my hear beat uncontrollably and I had to make the tears disappear as fast as I could to preserve the taught girl appearance. That at the end of the broadcast Angela came on stage and gave one of the most emotional speeches I've ever heard. Or that the queue for autographs lasted about 3 hours meanwhile each and every person there got the chance to say something or get a piece of advice. And I saw some young sopranos almost fainting in front of her. I also heard "oh my god, I can't believe you're in front of me", "national treasure" several times, "we're your greatest fans" about 30 times, around 150 signatures (or even more) for mothers, grandmothers, relatives or just for personal use on CDs, photos and books. There were flowers, lots and lots of photos and to end the evening in a joyful way towards 1am, a Spanish gentleman sung a song for her.

At the press conference
I won't say anything. Because after a performance I do my best to avoid the "did you like it" question because if I say that I can't breath properly others might not get it. A friend of mine told me... you are happy. Your eyes show it. It was my evening and mine only.

ROH spring queue. Friends only

I'm a little bit behind with news. It was one of those days when you sit in front of the computer at 9am, 5 minutes later, at 3pm, the stomach sings ...feed me or you'll suffer the consequences... and another 10 minutes later is 7:30pm, there are only 3 people left in the entire office, which means it's time to go home or else you'll sleep there as you don't have a key.
.
So, tomorrow, November 30, booking for Friends of ROH for Spring season. A Spring season which includes La Boheme. And particularly THAT La Boheme on June 19 and 23. As declared in many interviews already, Angela Gheorghiu&Roberto Alagna get back on stage in a production.
.
Difficult to choose. First one, second one, both... Non-Londoners have to choose. If it helps, David McVicar's Les Troyens (Kaufmann/Antonacci) opens on June 25. But this production is part of Summer booking.
.
Dear Friends, happy booking. Dear rest of all, see you online on the day of general booking on February 7, 2012!

Live on Realitatea TV

Liked it. The voice of Romania... the poetry of music. A very inspired producer :) That's what's written next to the name in the screenshots below.

The live broadcast was tonight and I hope it will be available online soon on realitatea.net. Angela Gheorghiu was special guest at Prime Time News. The interviewer, Dana Razboiu, knew what she was talking about and this got to a very enjoyable conversation. About Homage to Maria Callas, about career, colleagues, modern productions. From where I stand it's so important that the person who asks questions did some research.  This gives confidence. The questions make sense and help the guest to tell the story without facing awkward situations.

Contrary to the other two live interviews in the past month on a certain Romanian tv when I couldn't put down a word being a little bit angry (well, a little bit more) that the interviewer wasn't at all prepared to talk to an artist, now I'm happy with what I saw. The dialogue was relaxed and it was illustrated with music videos from Angela's performances as well as with photos.

I found it excellent that after talking about Tosca in cinema and the fact that Angela will attend the relay in Bucharest on Monday, they broadcasted the trailer.  Great idea!

Attention! Long interview ahead

Photo @Matei Buta
Today Mediafax (a Romanian press agency) released this interview with Angela Gheorghiu. Short questions, long answers. It's in Romanian, so Google translate might be very useful.
.
Some hints...
*future plans (this December) include a new project in Qatar with Vangelis
*she won't say "no" to a recital with Renee Fleming and Anna Netrebko. Lately I found out about Met Opera general manager's idea, a concert with three sopranos, with Renee Fleming and Anna Netrebko. They are still not sure about this. None of them wanted to get involved. One of them said maybe, the other.... I won't say who said what. I said "Ladies, whoever, whenever". I like these things.

Also lots of info on the latest CD.

And there's a short note published today in Adevarul:   Read tomorrow in Adevarul Weekend: Interview with soprano Angela Gheorghiu about the sensuality of the voice, the emotion that influences the modern technology, about perfectionism and about life nowadays in her home town, Adjud. Pay a visit at the newsstand on Saturday morning to get the paper version of the newspaper (if you live in Romania).

I sense there's more to come. Sorry guys, everything is in Romanian. But if there's new stuff in any of the materials, you'll find it here.

Something I like

It's weekend again. Time flies, isn't it? Last night I went to a concert at the Radio Hall here in Bucharest. Among other arias, the soprano sung Stridono lassu. Which reminded me I haven't posted a new version of one of my fav arias in a while.  This weekend's rendition is:

Pagliacci
Royal Opera House 2003

Nedda: Angela Gheorghiu
Canio: Placido Domingo
Tonio: Lado Ataneli
Peppe: Daniil Shtoda
Silvio: Dmitri Hvorostovsky

Orchestra and chorus Royal Opera House Covent Garden
Antonio Pappano

Homage to Maria Callas in iTunes Romania

and not only. But I wanted to mention it because iTunes made music download available in Romania only about two months ago. So maybe not too many people know about this. You have to instal iTunes on your computer and search for the album. You'll find it very fast. I haven't seen the album in music stores here yet, so downloading is a good option. And a less expensive one (10 euros). And it includes track 14, Habanera, the duet with Maria Callas.
.
Speaking of this particular track, it should be available online following the link in the booklet of the Deluxe version of Homage. Tried, but couldn't find it there. It might be just me, as I'm not very good with these modern technologies. Did anybody managed to get the duet on EMI website?

Appearances database

Had some free times these days and updated the database with every info I received lately. And here's the result.

But it's still long way till it's complete. Many performances missing from 1994 - 2000. There are also some performances that don't have a date. I read they took place in a certain year, but no idea about the month/day. They are placed at the bottom of the chart.

Maybe the cold, late fall weather inspires you to search through the programs, concert/opera tickets, photos, memories... Any hint would be highly appreciated.
.
Have a sunny weekend!

Angela&Roberto, concert at Teatro Colon, April 2012

According to the website of Teatro Colon, (page 58 of the 2012 season) Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna's concert will take place on April 11, 2012. Dos voces legendarias en un recital imperdible. But... Buenos Aires... the Kingdom of Far-Far-Away :)

Check out the official website for the confirmation of the event.

Tickets for Tosca relay in Bucharest, already on sale

Sadly, there's no announcement on the official website of the Opera House concerning this. A friend of mine (thanks!) called the box office of the National Opera by chance and this is how we all found out the the tickets for Tosca relay on November 28 went on sale two days ago. And that they WON'T the available online (at least not for the moment as the website selling them is not working) but ONLY at the box office.

So, dear Romanian fellows, don't wait too much for the electronic tickets. Pay a visit to the box office, which is open till 7pm every day. From our past experiences (Faust and Bolshoi Gala), the events involving Angela Gheorghiu get sold out fast.

I chose not to write in Romanian even if only people here are interested in this. It would have sounded bitter. English sweetened the situation.

On the trail of Tosca

Castel Sant’Angelo – from which Tosca leaps to her death
Photo @Royal Opera House Covent Garden
Found this article very interesting. Gavin Plumley thought of finding out if the settings in the opera are real or just vivid imagination. So he went to Rome and visited The Church of Sant’Andrea della Valle (Act I), the Palazzo Farnese (Act II) and Castel Sant’Angelo (Act III). I was surprised to read that Palazzo Farnese still exists and houses the French Embassy in Rome :). But that's all I say.

It's a very enjoyable Saturday morning reading.

Habanera on The Guardian

Today The Guardian posted the entire Habanera, the new video featured on Homage to Maria Callas. If you missed it on El Cultural, this is the chance to watch it.
.
.

New technologies have made it possible for Angela Gheorghiu to record a duet with legendary soprano Maria Callas. This track, the Habanera from Bizet's Carmen, has been recorded as a special bonus for Gheorghiu's new studio album Homage to Maria Callas and can be accessed by buying the deluxe edition or the iTunes download edition next week.
.
The orchestral accompaniment was painstakingly stripped away using Cedar Retouch Technology – "like audio Photoshop" explains recording engineer Jonathan Allen from Abbey Road Studios, who masterminded the project - leaving just Callas's voice. The players of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra then recorded a new accompaniment. Gheorghiu performed to this new accompaniment and finally the two singers were spliced in, sometimes in unison and sometimes apart. "We needed to create the illusion that Angela and Maria were in the same acoustic space," says Allen. "If it comes across as over-processed, it won't work. Angela's voice is incredibly rich in overtones, probably more so than Callas', so we had to reduce some of her sound - without degrading it - to match."

Homage to Maria Callas is available in iTunes starting October 28. As far as I saw, they're the only ones to include Habanera, Gheorghiu/Callas duet, in the package. All the other websites list this album with 13 tracks.

Downloading from iTunes is available only in selected countries.
