La Traviata, screening in Bucharest, March 29

.
Grand Cinema Digiplex will screen La Traviata, the 2007 La Scala production (the one on DVD, with Angela Gheorghiu as Violetta, Ramon Vargas as Alfredo and Roberto Frontali as Pere Germont) on March 29 starting 8pm. Too bad they're not promoting their screenings. I found it by chance last week, when there wasn't even a photo. This cinema is far away and the tickets are more expensive than for screenings in other cinemas and the target public for opera doesn't necessarily surf the internet all day long.
Maybe they'll do more in the future.

Have a great, sunny weekend!

La Boheme in Munich, sold out

Today Bayerische Staatsoper put on sale the tickets left after all those that applied and prayed got what they wanted. The applications were sent even one year in advance.

So no surprises that La Boheme (Gheorghiu/Calleja), Les Contes d'Hoffmann (Villazon/Damrau) and Jonas Kaufmann's recital are sold out. They are all part of July Opera Festival.
There are tickets still available for other performances. But...

Two alternatives available: keep looking for returns. Or queue at the opera house on the day of the performance and maybe somebody will give up the ticket. Bayerische Staatsoper kept the old fashioned way to sell tickets, by application. You don't know what you have to do to get tickets. Apparently there's no rule. You have to be lucky.

Congratulations to the happy owners!

"Dos leyendas de hoy", interview in Cantabile magazine

On the occasion of Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna's concert at Teatro Colon Buenos Aires on April 11, the Argentinean magazine "Cantabile" published this interview. I mentioned it some time ago as it is also available online. But it's nice to see the layout in the paper magazine. It's the March-April issue and it's available for free. If you go to the concert, you'll find it.

Dear Marcelo, thanks for the scans ;) Enjoy the concert!

La Boheme @Liceu, March 16, with PHOTOS

.
This was my first La Boheme live with Angela singing the title role. And I liked very much what I saw and heard. Giancarlo del Monaco's production is traditional. Maybe too traditional, being very similar to Zefirelli's style.

What I liked most...
act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3, act 3. Ok, you got it :) The sets (in the street, with some homeless people sleeping in the corners, the facade of the house on the right), the lighting (light coming for lamplights, early in the morning), and especially the voices. Each note built the intensity, created the tragic atmosphere, which made the perfect ground for the highlight, Mimi's Donde lieta usci.  Soft, lamenting, emotional, velvet tone in Angela's voice growing from the first line to the saddest goodbye possible: Bada, sotto il guanciale c'è la cuffietta rosa. Se vuoi serbarla a ricordo d'amor! Addio, senza rancor. (Pay attention, on the pillow there is a pink bonnet. If you want, keep a memory of love! Goodbye, without resentment). Yes, crying is allowed.
Lots of drama in this act. In the end, according to the length of the applauses, I bet everybody would have loved to listen again to the entire act. It was a-ma-zing!

Puccini though of sensitive hearts when he wrote the opera. So the drama alternates with some moments of happiness, which justify the paper fight in the beginning of the fourth act. Good idea, but way too many papers. It was a mess on stage. The bass drum note coincides with Musetta and Mimi's entrance. That sound suddenly terminates the fun and makes place for drama. Mimi is back but it's too late. Colline's aria, Vecchia zimarra, was so full of sorrow. Then the duet, the theme song of the first act, then... she dies. Whyyy? Not "why does she die", but "why did it end sooooo soon".
It was a very intense ending. The tenor has the final line. His "Mimi, Mimi" should break the heart. For me it did about 80%. There's place for more.

I disliked the fact that the conductor was booed at the curtain call. Maybe the audience didn't noticed his effort to keep everything together. And maybe the audience didn't know that this was his 16th La Boheme in a row with the fourth cast. I felt like he adapted very well. I said it many times, don't like it, don't applaud. Boo and opera don't get along, as everything here is extremely subjective.

Happy to be there. Happy that the audience at Grand Teatre de Liceu was so generous with the applauses after each aria and especially in the end, at the curtain call. Well deserved standing ovations for the entire cast. In my seat, dashing away the tears, up on my little fluffy cloud, away from the everyday life and deep into the magic of music, I couldn't think of anything else but how lucky I was to be there.

Dear Angela, thank you so much for another beautiful evening!

Angela Gheorghiu in La Rondine @ROH, July 2013

Angela Gheorghiu as Magda in the 2004 revival of La Rondine at ROH

Royal Opera House announced the new 2012/2013 season today.

It's the second revival of La Rondine, which was premiered in 2002 and brought back two years later, in 2004. On both occasions Ruggero's Magda is Angela Gheorghiu.

In 2013, Madgda's Ruggero is Vittorio Grigolo.

ROH is not too generous in giving details. They published the dates. Then part of the cast (Ermonela Jaho will probably lead the other cast). Now they have to match them.

La rondine Giacomo Puccini
Dir. Nicholas Joël. Cond. Marco Armiliato.
5 | 8 | 11 | 13 mat | 14 | 17 | 20 mat | 21 Jul

La Rondine is not included in ROH's cinema season. Start making plans :D

Something I like

The one and only, Martha. She'll be 71 this year and she's still playing. At Barbican next week and then mainly in Italy with Claudio Abbado. Isn't she amazing?

Here's the entire Ravel's piano concerto in G Major, sometimes in 2010.

Have a great weekend!

Program for the concert at Teatro Colon, April 11

ANGELA GHEORGHIU (SOPRANO)
ROBERTO ALAGNA (TENOR)
Con la Orquesta Estable del Teatro Colón
Teatro Colón, 11 de abril a las 20.30

Primera parte: fragmentos de Adriana Lecouvreur de Francesco Cilea.
Segunda parte: fragmentos de Tosca de Giacomo Puccini

Catabile Magazine also published two short interviews in the March issue. It's in Spanish, but Google language helps a lot.

She says:

He says:

Ok, off to watch Star Trek again. With such program, I must figure out how teleportation works.

"Angela Gheorghiu dazzles in Washington National Opera debut"

EDIT

Two more reviews from people who attended the concert:

The Examiner
Washington Post

****

This one is the best of the few existing. Terry Ponick wrote a review for The Washington Times. He attended the concert and was obviously impressed

[...] Ms. Gheorghiu’s voice bloomed magnificently in the concert’s second half as she sang brilliant arias from Jules Massenet’s Manon and Le Cid, the latter an epic opera last seen here roughly a decade ago with Plácido Domingo in the lead. At once creamy and dusky, Ms. Gheorghiu’s instrument boasted an incredibly smooth legato tone and an astonishing range, extending comfortably into the lower mezzo range. [...]

The rest of the articles acknowledge the concert, citing AFP, with some additions.
