"Adriana Lecouvreur" @Carnegie Hall - VIDEO

.
This video from the performance in New York in 2011 has just popped up on YouTube. Saw it video and remembered that Adriana in concert I attended in Berlin in 2010. For me, that was THE Adriana. I enjoyed the ones at ROH too, but the first one had a little extra something. Many asked how come, because it was a concert version. It was magic.  Magic is unexplainable. One have to live it to fully understand. In the end I couldn't stand up. Couldn't speak, couldn't do anything. Simply amazing. No sets, no costumes, no lighting. Just the voices, Angela Gheorghiu and Jonas Kaufmann.

There are more videos from this performance on YouTube, including Poveri fiori and Adriana's monologue. To the person who filmed...thumbs up! This is collectible stuff.

Something I like

BBC Proms is a celebration of music. One month and a half of symphonic concerts, opera in concert, recitals, chamber music and so on. Can't be there but listen to the performances on radio every evening.

A+ to Daniel Barenboim and his West-Eastern Divan Orchestra who performed ALL nine Beethoven's symphonies in one week. All of them. This is really amazing. And judging by the reaction of the audience, they give their best each evening. Wish I were there, especially for the 7th symphony, my favorite.
This evening he ended gloriously the series with Beethoven's 9th Symphony. Congrats, maestro!

There are some fragments (video and audio) are available on BBC iPlayer. Such as this one.

Long live the Proms! And have a nice Summer weekend!

Interview on Korean Yonhap Press Agency

So, how is your Korean? :) Mine isn't. Try Bing translator because you can past the link of the website and get the entire page translated at once. Not very accurate, but you can read between the lines and you'll get the point of this short interview. It's a phone interviewAngela Gheorghiu gave to the Korean  press agency, mainly about La Boheme. One of the question is (or very close to this) Which was the best Rodolfo so far? I let you discover the answer.

Update on the ticket sale @La Scala

As mentioned on the website, only a few seats will be available for online sale tomorrow (between 300 and 500 hundred per performance out of 2800 seats in the house!!). 80% of them are 224 euro/ticket (the ones in yellow). Surprise, surprise...aham?!
Some of the grey seats might be coming up for the online sale if related to bookings that are not being paid within the time limits showed onto the confirmation page.

.
Of course, there are some other cheaper seats. But remember what I said about the restricted view! I found a good example of what... not to buy. Those purple, 27 euro seats on top of the photo above. They're placed where pigeons nest and from there you get a spectacular view of the... chandelier :)

.
Good luck everyone!

Boheme @La Scala, tickets on sale on July 26, 9am

.
It's time to queue to get tickets for the last Boheme of the season.

The sale starts on Thursday, July 26 at 9am (GMT+1) on the website of La Scala. Expect long queue but you'll all make it, for sure. There are many options. Angela Gheorghiu is scheduled to perform on September 26, October 1, 4 and 8. Happy to see that Fabio Capitanucci will be Marcello. Really liked his voice in Les Troyens (Chorèbe) at Royal Opera House.

One Mimi, two Rodolfos. I have already chosen the date to go. Hope to be lucky and get the ticket.

One piece of advice....try to avoid the sides of the venue, boxes or galleries. You won't see a thing! Add something to the budget and get a central seat. The seating plan and and galleries visualization on the website of La Scala are very useful.

.
Ready, steady... happy shopping!

Musical Criticism: 5* for La Boheme in Munich

[...] The central pairing of Angela Gheorghiu as Mimì and Joseph Calleja as Rodolfo was one of two things that raised this above the merely good into the realm of the special.  I have never seen a more moving account of those two famous arias from the end of the first act (Rodolfo's Che gelida manina and Mimì's Sì, mi chiamano Mimì), nor of the heart-rending duet that follows (O soave fanciulla).  Both singers have that wonderful ability of being able to direct their voices over the orchestra without ever sounding like they are straining.  Gheorghiu also brought a speech-like expressivity to the quieter passages and Calleja that ringing ardour that one always longs to hear from a lyric tenor.  And if this opera is one of self-indulgence, the empathetic pleasure was helped along immeasurably by the sparks flying between the two.  In the third act, where they almost accidentally decide to wait until spring to split up (no one can be truly alone in the spring), it was as if they were two poles of a magnet ineluctably drawn together.  And near the end of the opera, when the dying Mimì interrupts the youthful tomfoolery of the quartet of friends, their caresses seemed achingly genuine. For me, this was THE Boheme. Can't say more as there would be only superlatives. Everything inside me said that this was the perfect voices match in the most beautiful production. Angela Gheorghiu as Mimi, Joseph Calleja as Rodolfo, Laura Tatulescu as Musetta and Levente Molnar as Marcello.

Masterclass @Georg Solti Accademia, starting on July 9

.
Romanian soprano Angela Gheorghiu joins a distinguished roster of artists sharing their skills with the singers of the future at the 8th Georg Solti Accademia this summer, along with Sir Richard Bonynge and Dennis O’Neill. Her own encounter with Sir George Solti was formative: it was his decision to engage the young singer as Violetta at Covent Garden which launched her career.

Gheorghiu takes time out of her busy schedule to work with a cosmopolitan group of 12 students - specially selected from 180 applicants - on the techniques of bel canto singing she has developed over a dazzling career. Conductor Sir Richard Bonynge will bring a lifetime’s experience of the operas of Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti and Verdi to his coaching, as will the legendary tenor Dennis O’Neill. These three artists join a superlative faculty who will cover all aspects of the operatic craft from vocal coaching, Italian language and diction to stage direction, led by young director Alexander Zeldin. Previous guest artists include José Carreras, Kiri Te Kanawa, Frederica von Stade, Thomas Allen, Mirella Freni and Leo Nucci.

This year’s group of young singers on the brink of operatic careers represent ten different countries, ranging from Armenia and Austria to Russia, Turkey, UK and the Ukraine, from 19-year-old German soprano Johanna Will to 29 year-old Armenian bass Arshak Kuzikyan.
